The movie Reign Over Me focuses on two men, Charlie Fineman and Alan Johnson. They were college roommates and good friends, but they had lost contact and had not talked for many years. When Alan sees Charlie in the street one day, he has headphones over his ears, and enclosed in his own world. The second time Alan sees him, he wants to talk with Charlie and catch up, but Charlie seems reluctant. Judging from his antisocial behavior, I would diagnosis his behavior as social phobia which is fear of any social situations.

The change in Charlie was caused by the 9/11 attack in which he lost his whole family including his wife, his two children, and his dog. So I think that he has PTSD or posttraumatic stress disorder, a kind of anxiety disorder that develops after a severe traumatic event or experience. Some of the symptoms of PTSD that Charlie has are Anxiety, irritability, depression, and not wanting to be reminded of the trauma. When Alan invites Charlie to his office to remind Charlie of his old life, he becomes extremely angry suddenly, and he shows violent behavior breaking things and yelling. Also, never wants to be reminded of the 9/11, his family, or death. When Alan’s Own father dies, Charlie wants Alan to not deal with it. Charlie kind of pretends that nothing has happened. And at the end of the movie, he becomes extremely angry when he sees a picture of his family.

I would also say that Charlie is suffering from depression (more specifically, manic depression). He has extreme mood swings and he shows suicidal behavior after he finally talks to Alan about the 9/11 attack.
